The 3 Things I Include in Every Movement Class

I adore juicy, yummy, movement practices.

AND I also love sessions that weave in thoughtful functional movements; to prepare the body for strong and stable shapes, deeper openings, fluid transitions & safe exploration.

Here’s how I do both:

Darcy, my other half (who’s also a Physiotherapist), taught me "RAM" a few years ago. The acronym stands for Release, Activate, Move.

If you should know one thing about me, it’s this: when it comes to movement I’m game to test anything out.

Pole dancing, CrossFit, Trail Running, Lyra, Silks, Barre, Ecstatic Dance…

So I give RAM a shot.

And after much solo-play (about a year’s worth… ‘cuz I’ll test it out but I’ll always play devil’s advocate, too!), I implemented this approach into ALL of my classes, via an intuitive flow.

Releasing, Activating, then Moving has been a game-changer for my own body and practice. (Especially for my poor S.I. joints, which were getting worked in every class where I skipped a proper "activation" – those lazy glutes were of no use to me or my low back!)

And by weaving RAM into my own class blueprint, I trust I’m not only taking care of my own body, but everyone in class – whether beginner or advanced.

After saying all of that, you may be wondering… Do I think you should implement RAM, too? Is that why I’m telling you all of this?

Heck no! Well, not necessarily...

Here’s why:

  1. I don’t believe there’s a right and a wrong way to teach or to move

  2. I don’t believe there’s a one-size-fits-all… to anything

  3. I don’t believe in conforming (though I’ve been there for a hot minute)

  4. I DO believe in teaching what lights you up

  5. I DO believe in teaching from a place of embodiment and personal practice

  6. I DO believe this is fluid & evolves over time

  7. I DO believe in knowing WHY you teach what you do – whether it’s movement, theming, philosophy, etc.

That last one’s a biggie.

And here’s the real kicker: You have all of those DO’s inside of you!

TRUST YOURSELF. TRUST YOUR PRACTICE.
